  • Reading order - the table below should be read in the following order:

    • read each a, i, u, e, o section from top to bottom and then from right to left:

      • ie:  あ   い   う   え   お   か   き   く   け   こ

    • then read each ya, yu, yo combination Japanese sound section from top to bottom and then from right to left:

      • ie:  きゃ   きゅ   きょ

  • Exceptions

    • ie:  し ,  ち ,  つ ,  じ  - different sound, read pronunciation

    • ie:  ふ ,  わ  - two ways to pronounce, read pronunciation

  • Sound equivalents - each hiragana character has a katakana and a romaji sound equivalent:

    • ie: hiragana  あ  = katakana  ア  =  romaji  "a"
