  • read each a, i, u, e, o basic Japanese sound section from top to bottom and then from right to left:

  • then read each ya, yu, yo combination Japanese sound section from top to bottom and then from right to left:
  • ie:  kya   kyu   kyo
  • Forming a Japanese sound
  • to form a Japanese sound, combine a consonant from a horizontal row with a vowel from a vertical row:
  • ie:  k  +  a  =  ka
  • ie:  k  +  ya  =  kya
  • Exceptions
  • ie:  shi ,  chi ,  tsu ,  ji  - different sound, read pronunciation
  • ie:  fu ,  ha  - two ways to pronounce, read pronunciation
  • ie:  sha ,  shu ,  sho ,  cha ,  chu ,  cho  - read pronunciation
  • Sound equivalents - each romaji has a hiragana and a katakana sound equivalent:
  • ie: romaji  "a"  =  hiragana  あ  =  katakana  ア
